Golden Global Perceptions

Infamous red-soled Christian Louboutin’s were tossed over her shoulder with one hand, while a sloshing martini was held in the other — Emma Thompson quickly became an icon for this year’s Golden Globe Awards.

Millions tuned in to NBC last Sunday evening to see their favorite actors and actresses dressed up from head to toe. The ceremony, dedicated to film and television achievements, was nothing short of a motion picture in itself.

The excitement of the 71st Golden Globe Awards seemed to hold promise. There was humor, sophistication, emotion and above all, Emma Thompson’s outcry for a cause.

Thompson’s campaign for women against high heels first graced the award ceremony when she ran on the red carpet barefoot. Later, her presentation of the best screenplay, during which her shoes were thrown, truly depicted how actions speak louder than words.

The various connotations regarding this scenario go to show how important it is to verify a stance. Without independently researching Thompson’s impulse, some viewers could have interpreted her actions as bizarre since no explanation was given prior.

Celebrities must deal with this constant strife between whether the media will depict their statements, actions and personality in a positive or negative way. The perceptions of celebrities are directly related to public opinion, especially when the opportunity to be publicly scrutinized is up for grabs.

To put their best foot forward is an expectation of celebrities. However, as noted at the Globes, celebrities have an image to portray — some may represent themselves in a certain fashion while others choose to send a message through unpredictable tactics.

Whether or not the Golden Globe Awards is an opportune time to promote a cause is unknown. However, it will be interesting to see how the trend of campaigning at award ceremonies will impact the future of celebrity behavior.

Thompson’s presentation Saturday evening at the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be an exciting opportunity to see her charisma once again displayed around the world.
